NGO Projects

Below are descriptions of several generic types of projects as well as some specific projects that are among those currently open for volunteers:

NGO Professional / Support Projects

No matter what the NGO specific mission and objectives may be, there are a number of common underlying functions they need to perform to ensure their sustainability and growth. Examples are such things as marketing, fundraising, planning, scouting, accounting, and organization development. However, most local NGOs do not have the internal expertise or time to carry out these critical capacity building tasks. Volunteer or intern activities to fill this gap are as diverse as writing, editing or translating reports, developing procedures, projects and plans, designing brochures, websites, messages and marketing pieces, researching and promoting via the Web, building databases, taking photos and videos, attending and facilitating meetings, interviewing, bookkeeping and budgeting, training or coaching, assessing, networking, performing SWOT analyses and endless others. Project assignments are generally not "open", but rather made by matching a potential volunteer's unique skills and interests to the needs of our NGOs at the time of inquiry.

CEDHA (Center for Human and Environmental Rights)

This NGO focuses on investigating and highlighting the link between environmental degradation and the violation of human rights. CEDHA advises and shares information with communities and organizations through workshops, forums, and talks/debates about the environmental issues that affect the well-being of people. CEDHA is actively spearheading a number of current projects including Legal Clinic for Human Rights and Environment, Global Governance Program, and Program on Human Rights, Environment and Poverty. CEDHA offers unique internship opportunities in the environmental and human rights fields for dynamic and self-motivated individuals to conduct research, fieldwork, training and to participate in its programs. There are many different activities volunteers can help with such as creating a library/archive of material, assisting in the publication of information, investigating new channels of information and public participation, analyzing the link between corporations and human rights, working with the Legal Clinic on investigations or helping CEDHA develop an Image Bank. Work location may be at CEDHA headquarters or offsite.
